Making a new background is pretty easy- my new favorite site is aqua poppy designs- if you click on the icon on the top left of my website with their name on it- they will tell you how to put up a new background..
maybe someone out there can give you more specifics- but I am a nurse- not a computer major:)

Yay on you joining the blog world!!! It's so fantastic here-I get so much mommy, girly, family, etc. advice, it's fantastic:) Plus, you get to watch everyone's family grow and change, even though we're all far away!!
My best suggestion is to take a little time to just play around with things. I've been blogging for a year and I'm still learning! I do like the new site Megs uses for backgrounds, also 'cutest blog on the block' has cute things for your site too. I'm so excited that we'll get to watch your family grow on here-can't wait!!!
